Introductory Workshops

Introduction to Structural Integration

Format: 12 hour workshop, presented over two days.

This class is designed to give students an introduction to the principles of Structural Integration through theory, touch and demonstration.

We shall investigate human structure, the fascial web and what we mean by an integrated body. We shall explore the history and teachings of Dr. Rolf that developed into her legacy known as the 10-session series. Students will see a demonstration of 1st hour work, learn about body readings and movement analysis.

Tuition: variable according to the location of the course, please see our schedule for details of individual workshops.

(I) The ISSI Preparatory Training Courses

(Ia) Human Anatomy: Interactive home study course

Format: 255 hours. Consisting of 165 hours theory; 90 hours practical, presented in sixteen consecutive weekly modules.

We offer this course as an independent study in anatomy as well as forming part of our preparatory courses for ongoing study in SI. We also recommend taking this course to strengthen your existing anatomical knowledge or if you have little or no knowledge of human anatomy.

This interactive course is designed to give you a comprehensive study in anatomy and physiology, emphasising the relationship between structure and function.

The course is comprised of 16 modules. Each module will require you to complete specific tasks on a weekly basis and participate in a weekly teleconference with your fellow students and instructor. The teleconference will allow you to ask specific questions as we review and discuss that week's completed module. Your progress will be regularly assessed through take-home exams. You may also contact the instructor at any time via e-mail.

Prior to the start date of this course, you will receive the required reading list and course materials. Contact the ISSI for more information on this course.

Tuition: $1,600

(Ib) Anatomy, Physiology and Bodywork (APB)

This course is offered in two formats:

Format A: completion of Anatomy Coloring Book plates followed by a 4 week in-class intensive.

Format B: completion of the 16 week interactive home study course followed by a 2 week in-class intensive.

Format A (370 hours)

Home Study (230 hours)

You must be prepared to invest in extensive, independent home study over 3 months prior to attending the in-class intensive. We shall send you preparatory information and the required reading list. Through completion of the indicated plates in the Anatomy Coloring Book and reading the indicated material, you will gain the knowledge essential to begin the in-class intensive section of the course.

Class Study (140 hours)

The ISSI's APB course is an intensive, in depth, integrative approach to anatomy, physiology and touch. Anatomy and physiology are taught from the perspective of Structural Integration. Our bodywork training is designed to enable you to practice and become familiar with the experience of working through the body with the whole person. It begins with a foundational full-body, integrative massage followed by an introduction to a number of significant contemporary bodywork modalities and myofascial work. We shall also investigate concepts in body/mind unity, therapeutic relationship and ethical considerations.

Tuition: $2,500

Format B (335 hours)

Home Study (255 hours)

Please see (Ia) above.

Class Study (80 hours)

This is an intensive 2 week integrative approach to bodywork. This training is designed to enable you to practice and become familiar with the experience of working through the body with the whole person. It begins with a foundational full-body, integrative massage followed by an introduction to a number of significant contemporary bodywork modalities and myofascial work. We shall also investigate concepts in body/mind unity, therapeutic relationship and ethical considerations.

Tuition: $1,300

(II) Theory and Embodiment (T&E) of Structural Integration

Class Formats

During this phase of your training we will explore Dr. Rolf's principles and the role of science, metaphysics and philosophy in them. You will learn her theories on human structure; the role of gravity and fascia, and the importance of relationship.

You will be given the opportunity to practice touch and fascial manipulation and recognise the potential of "The Recipe" for growth and change, both physical and psychological. We shall help you to learn how to see structure in relation to gravity and to recognize individual patterns in movement.

We strive to provide as comprehensive a learning experience as possible: in addition to learning the theory and observing the practice of the sessions, we recommend that you also receive the 10 sessions during this time to enhance your embodiment of "The Recipe".

In addition to teaching you the art of Structural Integration, we will also ensure that you have the skills required to start a successful practice. We will explore the ethics of the practitioner / client relationship, recognition of boundaries and the limit and the scope of Structural Integration.

Following the Theory and Embodiment phase of your training, we recommend a period of three to six months to consolidate the experience, skills and information gained prior to commencing the Practical Application phase.

Tuition: $4,000 (5 weeks condensed); $5,000 all other formats.

(III) Practical Application (PA) of Structural Integration

Class Formats

Students who have successfully completed the Theory and Embodiment phase are now able to put their knowledge into practice. We again focus on "The Recipe"; through review and discussion, you will deepen your understanding of all material studied in previous classes.

Focusing on the ten-series, we study each session; territory, depth of work, intention, tools and methods employed to achieve the goals of each one. Your teacher then performs the session and, following its observation, you will exchange the session with a designated partner under the direct supervision of your teachers. During the course of the class you will complete the ten-series with three additional models.

At the end of this phase of your training you now know enough to begin work. Through practice and careful observation, great interest, curiosity and a real commitment to growth, you will gain more and more understanding of the ideas that were introduced to you during your training. The good news is that the Recipe works, "even when done ineptly..." Ida Rolf.

On completion of this phase you will be awarded a certificate that will allow you to start your practice. However, you will not receive your graduation diploma until you have completed phase IV (practice follow-up) and phase V (process development).

Tuition: $5,000 (all formats).

(IV) Practice Follow-up (9 hours)

Format: once monthly teleconference calls; six months duration.

As you start to build your practice it can be a daunting prospect to suddenly find yourself away from the support system of the classroom. There will be issues that arise that you wish to discuss with experienced practitioners. Through teleconference calls, you will talk to the teacher and fellow practitioners for 1 hour and 30 minutes each month. We will discuss cases, ask questions, share pictures or talk about any concern or difficulty that you may be having with the beginning of your practice.

Tuition fee is included in the Practical Application class fee.

(V) Process Development

Format: 49 hours; seven days duration.

Timing: taken after completion of the practice follow-up.

In this final phase of your formal practitioner training you will learn the different possibilities of post-10 work. Using the format of a three-session series, you will learn how to develop the most appropriate plan for each client's individual needs.

Course Goals

1. Review of Dr. Rolf's theory and the10-session Recipe.
2. Learn and practice post-10 work.
3. Problem solving; practitioners' questions and feedback.

You will be awarded your graduation diploma on successful completion of this class.

By the end of this phase, your own experience will show you that learning Structural Integration is a lifetime project. Each class you take will have helped you to better understand the ideas presented in the beginning of your training.

Because of the complexity of the human structure and the nature of the material with which we are dealing, Structural Integration is not merely a technique that can be learned in theory, neither is it an art that is complete at the end of your training. By now, you will know that the fun, power and the beauty of this work will be revealed to each one of us through practice and convergence over time.

Tuition: $900

(VI) Continued Education Classes

Format: various, typically 49 hour workshops; seven days duration.

The ISSI offers a range of different Continuing Education classes that are designed to help advance and refine your understanding of Structural Integration. Workshops are essential for your personal development as a practitioner and offer an excellent opportunity to meet and exchange work with other practitioners. We recommend that you take at least one workshop a year for three to five years before considering the ISSI Advanced Training.

Tuition: variable according to the duration of the course; please see our schedule of classes.
